Running with Westin's Gear Lending Program and RunBoston

This marks the final post recapping my trip to Boston earlier this month. I did not get much exercise in during the conference because the conference organizers were a bit disorganized and did not tell us that we had access to a gym until after we had already arrived.

Since I only packed a carry-on bag for my trip, I did not have room to pack my running shoes. But I knew that I would be able to get some workouts in after I switched to the Westin Copley Place because of their partnership with New Balance. Westin and New Balance recently created a Gear Lending Program, where for a fee of $5 you can borrow a pair of running shoes during your stay. Along with shoes, you can also borrow shorts, tops, sports bras and socks.

After I checked into my room, I called the Service line and requested my shoes. I also asked for a top and shorts. After a short wait, this drawstring bag was delivered to my room. You need to be there to sign for the items.

Rave Run: Redondo Beach

Last week, I was in LA for the weekend and had an 8 mile training run on the docket. Since it has been too hot for me to run outside in Albuquerque, I decided to hit the pavement while I was in sunny Southern California.

I ran from where I was staying in Torrance down to Redondo Beach.

Look at all of the palm trees!

Wine and Dine Half Marathon 2014 - Week 6 Training Recap

A little over 30 days to go for Wine & Dine and I am woefully unprepared. The last few months have been way too much for me to handle. On top of moving across the country, we moved into a new house that is needing about 100 percent more work than we anticipated - basically, we thought we would not be doing many renovations. Instead, we are needing to fix up each and every room in the place! We also brought home our little Gus two months ago. If you have ever had a puppy, you understand how much work and supervision a little puppy needs.

These two changes in my life have brought on a lot of additional stress, and making time for half marathon training has been extremely difficult. Not having time to work out is also stressing me out!

I did not have much of a goal for this race besides the fact that I wanted to run/walk with my sister. It looking more and more like I am going to either need a good training push over this next month or I am going to have to walk most of the race. I am a little disappointed with my training progress to date, but life happens.

This week saw absolutely zero running miles.

Wine and Dine Half Marathon 2014 - Weeks 3 and 4 Training Recap

It has been another crazy two weeks! As I described last time, we are currently in the middle of remodeling our guest bathroom. It still needs a few finishing touches, so I am not going to share the pictures of the room just yet!

The in-laws returned home on Monday, and Gus immediately got sick. He went to the vet and got some tests and it turned out to be nothing major. (Thank goodness!) Speaking of Gus, he is going to be going in for his last round of shots this week. I am so excited to be able to take him out soon! He is on my last nerve, but because he is so cute, I can't stay mad at him.

While he was sick, Gus was on a diet of boiled chicken and rice with pumpkin. He ate so messily that when he was done eating, his face was orange from the pumpkin! He is so silly.

With all of the activity going on, I haven't been keeping up with my training runs. I decided to sign up for the Central New Mexico Race for the Cure 10K four days before the race because I had a 6 miler on the calendar and figured this would probably be the only way I would actually get it done.

Wine and Dine Half Marathon 2014 - Week 2 Training Recap

This week's training did not go as scheduled. I was away on business for two days this week, and we currently have visitors staying with us. Our first visitors to New Mexico actually!

We are also in the midst of remodeling our guest bathroom. Just another project in our 6,000 home improvement projects!

I thought I had taken before pictures, but this gives you an idea of the horror that was in the bathroom. There was three different types of tile: all different sizes and not matching. The floor was partially tile and partially laminate. The hardware and electrical outlets didn't match either, and also was not our style.

This is what the bathroom looked like after day 1 of demolition. I'm so happy to see it go!

Wine and Dine Half Marathon 2014 - Week 1 Training Recap

Only 66 days left until I head out to Walt Disney World to run my third runDisney half marathon! Now that I feel sort of settled into a routine here in Albuquerque with my job and new puppy, I have finally started up with my training program.

I actually do not have a goal time for this race because I am planning to run/walk with my sister and brother-in-law (who will be doing his first half marathon). I still want to get the mileage in before race day just to get myself back into running mode.

August 25 to 31, 2014
Monday: rest

Wednesday: YogaVibes.com - Detox Quick Flow (20 minutes)
Thursday: rest

An Outdoor Run + {Product Review} 2Toms BlisterShield

For the first time in a very, very long time, I got to run outside! Last weekend was absolutely gorgeous out and warm enough for this Californian to brave the elements. I knew it wasn't going to last long, so I took a break from my best friend, Mr. Tread Mill, and hit the pavement.

I headed past the Netherlands Carillon

And across the Memorial Bridge.

I stopped to check out the frozen Potomac River.

I made my way past the Lincoln Memorial

and the Washington Monument. The scaffolding is coming down, slowly but surely.

I ran down the National Mall. Here's the Smithsonian Castle.

I made it to the National Gallery of Art before turning around. I planned to complete between 6 and 9 miles on this run and wound up finishing 8.22 miles. It felt so good to be outside and enjoy the sights. My first race of 2014 is coming up quickly and getting outside was just what I needed to reassure myself that I am ready for it.

I also used my outdoor run to test out a product I recently received. Medi-Dyne sent me a few samples of 2Toms BlisterShield. On runs, my left foot in particular has problems with chafing and blister formation, so I was interested to see how this product might help.

I opened one of the sample packets I received and sprinkled half of the powder into each of my socks.

Then I shook the socks around to spread out the powder. Putting the powder-lined socks on created a little bit of a mess, especially since my pants were black! I could definitely feel the difference of having the powder in my sock because it actually felt like more friction instead of less. That made me a bit worried. There was no reason to be though because I had no foot problems during or after my run!

I also thought that taking my socks off would create a mess but this also wasn't the case. There was no mess and the product washes right off in the shower. I will be using the second sample on my next long, outdoor run for sure!

Disclosure: I received two sample packets of 2Toms BlisterShield from Medi-Dyne. No compensation was received. All opinions are my own. Read my full disclosure here.

January 2014 Happenings

Welcome to February! January was a busy and very very cold month. Here's a brief run down of January 2014!

- #Polar Vortex: I am so over this weather. We experienced 6.6 inches of snowfall in January and I have lost count of how many single digit degree days we have had. This has been by far the coldest winter we've had since I moved here in 2011. Is it spring yet?

- RAMW Restaurant Week: I got to experience a new restaurant this month as well as enjoy another meal at an old favorite during DC Restaurant Week. There has been some noise about how Restaurant Week isn't really a good deal and might also be a rip off. I don't disagree, but you can also find good deals by scouring the menus and picking high price point restaurants.

I had a lunch date with myself at Sushi Taro, my favorite sushi restaurant in DC. My lunch was comprised of a 3 box tasting of shrimp and vegetable tempura, salmon and albacore tuna sashimi and soba. For my sushi course, I received eel, yellowtail, tuna, salmon, white fish and shrimp nigiri and salmon and avocado maki. Lunch ended with a serving of green tea ice cream. Yum! And not bad for $20!

Raisin Bread and I had a friend who was in town for a week on business so we set up a Restaurant Week excursion with him to Charlie Palmer Steak on Capitol Hill. I don't often find myself around the Hill but this establishment was teeming with Hilly people.

I started my meal with a cocktail called The Lobbyist's Libation (Hendrick's Gin martini with cucumber puree and lemon-infused simple syrup). I wasn't at the table when our amuse bouche arrived, but it was yummy and tasted like tomato soup.

For my three course meal, I had the red oak and roasted beet salad with crisp goat cheese, black walnut and a sherry shallot vinaigrette, the grilled angus sirloin with short rib ravioli, sweet potato puree, braised swiss chard and black garlic jus, and lastly, green apple consomme with crisp apples, cinnamon panna cotta and almonds.

My favorite course was the entree. It was perfectly cooked and I really liked the accompaniments, especially the black garlic.

- Funniest Thing to Happen: I won a year's supply of toothbrushes from Colgate and Influenster. Sweet! Clean teeth! If you haven't tried the Colgate SlimSoft toothbrush before, I highly recommend it. It's magical.

- Making an Apartment a Home: January was the first month since we've moved to DC that both Raisin Bread and I weren't in graduate school. We got a chance to spruce up the apartment a little with some greenery. I love plants but I have a history of not having the greenest of thumbs. Hopefully, these bad boys will thrive.

- The Treadmill is My Friend: When it's cold, I treadmill. When it's icy, I definitely treadmill. I'm currently training for my next half marathon, the Rock 'n' Roll DC Half Marathon in March. I also got to put in some miles in my awesome new Union Jack leggings, which I received from my mother-in-law for Christmas.

Total mileage this month: 30.8 miles

- Trip to San Francisco: Last but not least, as you know, I visited San Francisco over MLK weekend. Be sure to check out my posts on this fun trip. The final post will be up later this week.

Recent Happenings - November 2013

Hello, friends. You may have noticed that I haven't had a Week in Review in quite some time. I have decided to discontinue them because I find them boring to read on other blogs and I also find them boring to write. So from time to time, I am planning to do Recent Happenings posts instead.

- I was officially in hibernation mode this weekend. I ran all of my errands and did my long run on Saturday. Because this was the forecast on Sunday....Yeah, it is freezing. Hopefully, this passes soon.

- I entered the random drawing for a spot in the 2014 Nike Women's Half Marathon in DC. I actually am not dying to run it, so I would be fine not getting in. I'll find out in a couple of weeks if I do though.

- I finished reading book #2 of my goal of 15. My second book was Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. The writing and the characters are so engaging. The book only makes me want to visit Savannah even more!

- My yoga and stretching regime has really fallen by the wayside. My body is really starting to suffer because of it. I need to get back to my goal of yoga once a week.

- As you may know, I am a Girls Gone Sporty Ambassador. I recently received a pair of these bad boys for a Girls Gone Sporty Gear Girls Review. Six ambassadors got a chance to test out a pair of Under Armour Sunglasses of their choice and review them. You can read my review plus the other Gear Girls reviews here. I will most likely write an extended review in the coming weeks.

Under Armour UA Rumble Sunglasses

- My race calendar for next year has not been shaping up much. I am officially registered for only two races so far. It seems so weird not to have more on the docket. If you have any recommendations for races in the DC area, please let me know!

- Mileage update for the year: 331.37 miles!

Happy Monday!

Weeks in Review (September 30 to October 13, 2013)

This was another rough week but for entirely different reasons. It has rained five of the last seven days! It definitely felt like it was never going to stop raining.

Because of the weather, it has been pretty hard for me to get out and do stuff. We did get to have some fun this weekend though. I found out late last week that I won two entries into the Cosmic Run 5K, so Raisin Bread and I ran it on Saturday night. We had a blast! Stay tuned for my post later this week.

Week In Review (September 23-29, 2013)

This week has been rough. I'm not sure if it is because the sun isn't rising as early combined with the sun setting earlier or maybe it is because I got a flu shot on Monday and maybe that has made me fatigued. But I have been so tired this week. I even took a four hour nap on Sunday afternoon, which is totally unlike me. I hope I get over this soon!

I participated in the Light the Way 5K on Saturday, which I will recap later this week. It was a lot of fun and can't wait to tell you about it.

Light the Way 5K Finish Line

The rest of the week was pretty bad workout-wise. I had to stop a few times mid-workout because I was so drained.

Monday: Rest
Tuesday: BBL - Bum Bum (30 minutes)
Wednesday: BBL - Sculpt (didn't finish)
Thursday: Rest
Friday: Rest
Saturday: Light the Way 5K (recap coming soon)
Sunday: BBL - Bum Bum (30 minutes)

Total yoga this week: 0 times
Total mileage this week: 3.1 miles
Total mileage this year: 282.73

On Friday, I volunteered at the packet pick-up for a local race that happened on Saturday morning. It obviously wasn't a race I did because I was at the Light the Way 5K. During my volunteer shift, something occurred to me which made me think. I wondered if I felt that there was something wrong with me volunteering my time for a for-profit race. I have volunteered two times now at for-profit races and it didn't even occur to me the first time to ask myself why I was volunteering at an event for a business that was making tons of money. Anyway, to save myself from having to answer that question next time, I'm going to volunteer for not-for-profit events in the future.

On Saturday, Raisin Bread and I drove out to Annandale to try out a new-to-us Korean barbecue place: Kogiya. The wait was horrendous but the food was great. We had quite the spread. We ordered a seafood pancake, bulgogi and kalbi and of course, had loads of banchan. Yum yum! Kogiya seems to bring in a lot of bodies with their all-you-can-eat barbecue but we weren't sold on the cuts of meat, so we ordered a la carte.

Here's hoping for more energy this week!

Week in Review (September 16 - 22, 2013)

I'm pretty sure that this is something I haven't mentioned on the blog before, but this is one thing that I have been plugging away at all year long. What am I talking about? Well, one of my goals this year was to complete the 13 in 2013 Challenge. That is to complete 13 races of any distance this year. You can also do a set distance, but I chose to do a variety of distances including 5K, 10K, 10 miles and half marathon. So far, I have completed nine of the 13 runs. You can see what I've done to date on my Race Results + Recaps page.

That means I have four more runs left to reach my goal, but I went a little overboard and have eight more runs on the schedule. I had better not sign up for anymore! This is partly due to the fact that I accidentally signed up for a series instead of one race back in May, so by the end of the year, I'll finish another four 5K's, one 10K and three half marathons. Most of them are virtual so they won't be officially timed.

The weather in DC is finally comfortable and I have been enjoying being outdoors more. This is what the week looked like. I'm still having fun with the Brazil Butt Lift DVDs and put in some runs this week after my week off.

Monday: Brazil Butt Lift (BBL) - Sculpt (50 minutes)
Tuesday: BBL - High & Tight (35 minutes) and Tummy Tuck (20 minutes) + ran 3.1 miles
Wednesday: rest
Thursday: BBL - Sculpt (50 minutes)
Friday: BBL - Cardio Axe (30 minutes)
Saturday: BBL - Sculpt (50 minutes) + walked 4 miles
Sunday: ran 5 miles

Total yoga this week: 0 times
Total mileage this week: 8.1 miles
Total mileage this year: 279.63 miles

Happy Monday!

Week in Review (September 9 to 15, 2013)

Big life decisions were made this week! I decided which two half marathons I will be running for 2014. The first will be the Rock 'n' Roll Nation's Capital Half Marathon in March, and while the second one hasn't open for registration yet, I'm hoping to run the Disney Wine and Dine Half in November (assuming it's the same time as this year).

Image source: Rock 'n' Roll Marthon Series

I was getting a little nervous that I didn't have any races scheduled yet for next year! Yes, I'm a planner.

I decided to take the week off from running and instead, focused on doing my Brazil Butt Lift workouts. Raisin Bread and I also decided to take a bike ride this weekend since the weather was so nice. We biked a portion of the Mount Vernon trail.

Here's what this week looked like:

Monday: Bum Bum (30 minutes)
Tuesday: Cardio Axe (30 minutes) + Tummy Tuck (20 minutes)
Wednesday: Bum Bum (30 minutes)
Thursday: rest
Friday: Cardio Axe (30 minutes)
Saturday: Bum Bum (30 minutes) + High and Tight (35 minutes)
Sunday: 7 mile bike ride

Happy Monday!

Weeks in Review (August 26 to September 8, 2013) + Weekend Fun in Baltimore

After last week's Disneyland Half Marathon weekend, you would think I would be resting my tired self, but nope, I did another race this weekend. Here's a sneak peek at how I looked after my Color Me Rad 5K

Because the race was up in Baltimore, Raisin Bread and I decided to head up there for the night. We had an early dinner at Thames Street Oyster House in the Fells Point neighborhood. This was both of our first times in this area of town, and we both loved it.

I ordered a selection of raw oysters and some jumbo shrimp to share. Raisin Bread had the Rhode Island Quahog Chowder. For our entrees, I had an ahi tuna special with gnocchi, sweet potato and cauliflower, while hubby had the swordfish with risotto. The food was amazing. I loved my tuna, which was perfectly seared.

After dinner, we walked around the neighborhood and along the pier before checking into our hotel for the night.

Sunset in Baltimore

I'll have a full recap of the race next week. For now, here is what the workouts looked like these last two weeks.

Before we left for California, Raisin Bread purchased a DVD workout set called "Brazil Butt Lift." Romantic?? I will be starting the full schedule next week, but I did get to try it once on Thursday. It is hard but fun. We'll see if I can keep up with the schedule though because it seems like a lot to me.

Lehigh Valley Zoo Run Wild 2013 10K - Race Recap

On Sunday, I ran the 5th Annual Lehigh Valley Zoo Run Wild 10K. This time I signed up for a 10K that was actually the correct distance! The race was special to me because it was the first race I ran with Raisin Bread. Let me tell you running with the hubby is a lot of fun. We drove up to Pennsylvania on Saturday and spent some time with his dad, stepmother and brother - helping them clean up from their yard sale, shooting hoops and bouncing around on their trampoline.

Look at these crazy kids jumping around! Oh wait, it's just Raisin Bread doing the jumping.

After dinner and more hanging out, we completed the remainder of the drive to the Lehigh Valley and Raisin Bread's mother's house. We didn't make it until almost midnight, which meant very little sleep before our early wake-up time.

I had my usual pre-race breakfast: water and a peanut butter and banana sandwich. Mmm...nommy!

Raisin Bread's mother offered to join us to watch us run. What a nice thing to do! We left the house around 6:45 am. The main road leading to the zoo was closed and we hit a dead end. Luckily, there was a lady jogging, who actually works for the zoo, and she gave us directions on how to get to the parking lot. Better signage would have been helpful! There were a lot of other cars behind us that did the same thing. Not fun to get lost on the way to a race.

After another 10 minutes, we finally got to the zoo and picked up our race packets. The 10K had only about 225 registrants, so our line was very quick.

We had a few minutes to kill before we had to get to the starting line. Raisin Bread saw that there were massages being given nearby, so he wandered over to see if they cost money. They were free! So we promptly got in line for a pre-race massage! So nice!

Since we were in a zoo, located in a nature preserve, there were some animals around, such as this peacock!

We had just enough time to hit the bathroom before it was time to get to the starting line. We discovered that there were lots of mosquitoes around the park at this point. Raisin Bread had a bite on his forehead and I got five bites on my legs. Boohoo!

The race quickly started and we were off. It was very crowded because the 5K and 10K both started at the same place and time. The race was mostly on pavement but there were about three spots that ventured onto trails. Here we are heading into the woods!

The weather was very nice that day. Not sunny and not humid in the 70s. It was perfect race weather for me!

Soon after the 2 mile mark, the 10K and 5K split onto different routes, which was so nice because there was so much room and no more need to weave around people. It was also at this time that we started climbing uphill along some switchbacks. Just when we thought the climbing had ended, we came to a monster hill! I couldn't run uphill anymore so I walked up the killer hill as did most people my pace. From the bottom of the hill to the top, we had gained over 320 feet! Ugh.

Big mean hill!

When we got to the top, we got a pretty nice view of the valley!

Around mile 4, we were greeted by these furry guys. I love bison. They are such majestic creatures although I wouldn't want to be on the other side of that fence!

After the fourth mile, it was pretty much two more miles of very fast downhill, which was amazing after such a grueling middle route. As we entered the final stretch, we re-entered the zoo grounds. I was able to spot some emus and kangaroos as we were finishing.

Raisin Bread and I sprinted to the finish and I beat him by a hair. I think he let me beat me since he's such a nice husband.

We grabbed some snacks and headed home.

My clock time was 1:12:22. The race wasn't chip timed, and we started in the back of the pack. My actual time might have been a minute or so less than the clock time.

My Nike Running app keeps crashing, so I'll update with my split times once it's working again. It doesn't look like this was a PR for me though. The route was just too tough.

Splits from my Nike Running app:
Mile 1: 10:38
Mile 2: 10:11 *fastest mile
Mile 3: 14:32 *big hill!
Mile 4: 11:55
Mile 5: 10:48
Mile 6: 10:35

Average pace: 11:27

Overall, I thought this was a great race. My only complaint was the difficulty we had finding the parking lot. Other than that, it was well-organized and well-staffed. The route was challenging, but it was scenic. I also didn't like the mozzies, but they can't help that.

Runners also had the chance to visit the zoo after the race, but we had brunch plans and didn't take advantage of that.
